Pianiste singulier, précieux compositeur, Francis Lockwood est un musicien incontournable. Son succès, il le doit à un jeu d’une grande richesse harmonique, le tout empreint de références aussi riches que variées, aussi bien au jazz qu’au rock et au classique. Il célèbre ici le jazz new-yorkais des années 1940 aux années 1970 : des embardées bebop en hommage au célèbre club le Minton’s Playhouse (« Minton’s Blues »), aux accents hard bop et soul jazz en clin d’œil au label Blue Note, et s’autorise même une embardée vers le jazz-rock (« Vintage Theme »). Produit par David Séchan, enregistré par Phil Delire pendant une semaine de résidence au studio ICP à Bruxelles, cet album permet à Francis Lockwood d’y exprimer toute sa formidable palette de compositeur, entre balades (« Didier ») et titres syncopés (« Habana Night »). This album celebrates New York’s jazz from the Forties to the Seventies, and swerves from bebop — a tribute to the famous Minton’s Playhouse club with Minton’s Blues — to the later hard bop and soul jazz colours of the Blue Note label, even allowing an incursion into jazz-rock (Vintage Theme). Produced by David Séchan and recorded by Phil Delire during a week’s residency at ICP studios in Brussels, this album gives Francis Lockwood the chance to express the full palette of his composing talents, ranging from ballads (Didier) to the syncopated beat of titles such as Habana Night.
