En 1953, Lionel Hampton débarque pour la première fois en Europe avec son grand orchestre. Le choc est considérable et le public enthousiaste, si bien qu'une seconde tournée est organisée l'année suivante. Par chance, nombre de concerts ont été enregistrés qui permettent, un demi-siècle plus tard, de retrouver la puissance hallucinante et le swing fou du big band de l’un des grands maîtres incontestés du Jazz.
