Enregistré par Hugues et Louis Panassié à New York en 1972, ce double album réunit deux monuments du jazz et du rythme. Willie Smith (dont il s’agit des derniers enregistrements) est l’un des plus éminents pianistes stride et Jo Jones figure au panthéon des plus grands batteurs de l’histoire. Ces titres, initialement parus en 1972 ont été numérisés, restaurés et regroupés en 2002 par Laurent Verdeaux, qui a pu, à partir des bandes d’origines, restituer le fil des séances et intégrer des passages inédits. L’album monte tout en puissance et finit en apothéose. Un grand moment de jazz !

Recorded by Hugues and Louis Panassié in 1972 in New York, this double album brings together two monuments in jazz and rhythm: Willie Smith (it’s one of the last recordings by this most eminent of stride pianists), and Jo Jones, whose seat is the drummers’ Hall of Fame is assured.) This music first appeared in 1972, and were digitally transferred, restored and reassembled in 2002 by Laurent Verdeaux; working with the original tapes, he was able to reconstruct the sessions’ chronology and integrate previously unreleased takes.
