Dorado Schmitt n’est plus à présenter, depuis la fin des années 1970, il est le grand modernisateur du jazz manouche, à qui il a consacré son oeuvre et écrit parmi ses plus belles pages.
Adulé par beaucoup pour son merveilleux sens mélodique et un feeling monstre, il a notamment réussi à conquérir les États-Unis, en devenant l’icône du festival Django Reinhardt de New York, qui se déroule chaque année au Birdland, temple du jazz newyorkais.
Le guitariste avait un projet qui lui tenait à coeur depuis longtemps, enregistrer avec un jazz band (guitares, cuivres, piano, batterie, contrebasse) et s’aventure ici vers d’autres répertoires aux sonorités bensoniennes, ou brésiliennes (il offre une belle version de son « tube » Bossa Dorado) et la grande variété (Sacha Distel).
Enregistré dans des conditions techniques limitées, il dégage de ce live un son brut, loin d’un cahier des charges studio, mais qui est sublimé par une ambiance et une chaleur, qui offrent de beaux moments de vérité musicale.

Worshipped by many for his wonderful melodic sense and immense ‘feel’, Dorado conquered America and became an icon of the Django Reinhardt Festival, the famous annual event held at Birdland, New York’s temple of jazz.
For years the guitarist had dreams of recording with a jazz group — guitars, brass, piano, bass, drums — and here he ventures into different territory, with sounds recalling George Benson, Brazil (notably in an excellent version of his hit ‘Bossa Dorado’), or else the great pop played by another guitarist named…Sacha Distel.
This live recording made under difficult conditions has a ‘gutsier’ sound than a studio album, but the music is sublimated by an atmosphere and warmth that make it a brilliant moment of truth.
